Current Events

There are many events that have occurred within the city of Guatemala concerning the Maya Indians.  The following are just a few summaries of articles that were recently published within the last two years (1998-2000).
 
 
 

February 23, 1998: article written in the Agence Finance Presse in the International News
     section discusses the violence that ensued after the Maya Indians informed some 
     international players of their current situation.  In the fight that was initiated by members of
     the group Peace and Justice, there was one person killed and four others that were injured.
 
 

September 23, 1998: article written by Celina Zubieta in the International Press Service 
     validates the accussations made by Mayan leaders.  In this article the leaders ask that the 
     article 203 of the Constitution also include recognizing the customs and laws of the Maya
     Indians.  However, the National Vanguard Party (PAN) states that by doing this would
     promote more division in the country.
 
 

May 18, 1999: article written by Miereya Navarro for the International Herald Tribune 
     described the voters' decision in constitutionally changing the rights of the Mayans'.  The 
     proposal was rejected. 
 
 

September 4, 2000: article written published in the Americas Review World of Information in
       the section entitled "Comment & Analysis; Country Profile; Statistics; Forecast; pg. 1". 
       This article is basically a review of the city of Guatemala under the President Alfonso
       Portillo.  The article actually ends with ratings for risk assessment in certain elements of 
       Guatemala; Economic: satisfactory, Political: improving, Regional stability; satisfactory,
       and the Stock Market: improving.
