What motivated the EZLN?

How did Chiapas get to where it is today?  What were the main objectives and complaints of the EZLN when they declared war on January 1, 1994?  The EZLN is working to make social changes in the region of Chiapas.  They are trying to regain the Indian and peasant class rights to the land.  They don't claim to work specifically along ethnic lines or issues, but these issues coincide with the social and political issues.
