   Bibliography for Mayan Nationalism

The sources listed for our web-site will all be useful.  They each have their own unique way of presenting the information they contain.  Some give a general overview of Mayan history and some give information regarding Rigoberta Menchu.  Travel information and ancient Mayan history are included in some of the sources as well.

This book discussed the Mayan civilization as a whole.  It gives extensive information into the civilization.  The language used in the Mayan civilization is also discussed as well as La Violencia.

This site contains the script from a 1992 interview with Rigoberta Menchu, a Mayan refugee, author, and Nobel Peace Prize recepient.  It will be helpful to the web page because we intend to include information about Rigoberta Menchu and her book.  The site also includes recent newsbytes, links to relevant web sites, and access to the autobiography of Rigoberta Menchu.

This site gives a brief history of Guatemala and the Mayan culture.  It also included recent history and events from the country.  It will be useful in giving information about things that are happening in Guatemala now and what effect it may have on Mayans today.

This site gives information about Guatemalan travel.  It gives links to all information for travel in Guatemala and includes pictures.  It will be useful for our web site because we also wanted to include travel.

This site will be useful in that it’s the most extensive directory of web pages on Guatemala.  There are several subjects to choose from such as:  art, business, country facts, health, history, recreation, weather forecast, and more.  It will be a good source to get general information about Guatemala.

     This source is an article detailing recent developments in the Maya movement for greater equality and recognition.  It's focus is a talk given by Maya activist Tomás Sén Tecún in Berkeley's La Peña  Cultural Institution on November 5, 1998.

     This source provides an essay regarding the history and recent developments of Mayan Nationalist movements along with an analysis of the emerging Pan-Mayanism which is serving to unify the struggle for Mayan Nationalsim in Guatemala and throughout Latin America. 
 

Warren, Kay B., ed. The Violence Within:  Cultural and
  Political Opposition in Divided Nations.  Boulder, CO: 
   Westview Press,1993.

This book is a compilation of essays written by several different authors concerning civil unrest in nations.  There is an essay entitled “Interpreting in La Violencia in Guatemala:  Shapes of Mayan Silence and Resistance” written by the editor Kay B. Warren.  In the essay the author examines the impact of the war between the military and guerilla forces had on those that were on the outside.  She also takes a look at the war and how it impacted the story tellers and the new stories that they were going to tell about the war.

Zur, Judith.  Violent Memories:  Mayan War Widows in
  Guatemala. Boulder, CO:  Westview Press, 1998.

This book takes the lives of many Mayan widows and their families and puts them into writing.  Due to security reasons, Zur discussed how she was unable to include the names of families in the material.  This book also discussed everything during the time before “la violencia” to everything that happened as a cause of it.  The book also discussed the treatment of people throughout the whole event.
