Salvador Allende's Revolutionary Rhetoric

For those who possess merely a cursory knowledge of the man, Salvador Allende appears to be a fundamentally contradictory figure -- a democratically-elected Marxist President.  Under closer scrutiny, however, these apparent contradictions are in name only.  According to Latin American historian James D. Cockcroft, Allende aimed to create “revolutionary democratic socialism” because “Allende viewed revolution and socialism as a highly democratic process for all people... democracy was actually the key to revolution and socialism.”
