             Social Decay

The post-classic Mayan society had four different social classes.  The Maya almehenob, ahkinob, ah chembal unieob, and the ppencatob.  These were the nobles, priests, the common people, and the slaves.  In their society the batab’s are like the police today, they were to in force all judicial responsibilities.  These batab’s had their own army and one of their main concerns was to make sure that the village’s paid their money to the halach uninic.  The batab in considered to be in the nobel class as the ah cuch cabob were too.  These men serve as a senator does for his or her state.  Meaning that they got to vote in the government while representing their village.  The ah kulelob, served as the right hand man for the batab.  These men carried out the orders and did the dirty work for the batabs.  The tupiles are kind of the security cops in today’s society because they are involved with law enforcement but are on the lower end of the structure.

Priesthood is a very large part of the Mayan society.  Priests were very respected and well known throughout the towns and villages.  There were many sub-groups of priesthood like the chilanes.  This type of priest gave replies of the gods to the people.  They basically were the middlemen between the gods and the Mayan people.  The nacom is the same as the Pope because they are elected for life.  However, the nacom is looked at completely different then the Pope is in today’s society.  In fact, the nacom was the man who preformed human sacrifices.  Priesthood was respected and feared by the Mayan people.

The common people were farmers who paid tribute to the nobel class.  This tribute went to the supreme ruler, their local lords, and the priesthood.  The slaves were owned many different types of people and were made to do different tasks.  There are a few ways one becomes a slave.  A prisoner of war from another village or tribe was usually sold as a slave.  Being born into slavery or a punishment for stealing or breaking a law.  These people were bought were bought and sold like objects and were treated horribly.

There are many different theories on why there was social decay in the Mayan society.  For example, an economic revolt by the common people because of being cheated for many years.  Or the growth of demands by the nobel class that engaged a revolt from the rest of society.  Or just a depopulation problem.  The whole truth is unknown but it seems all of these theories all could have happened.
