Spanish Conquest

This web page examines and discusses various aspects of the Spanish Conquest of the Inca and certian facets of the Inca society immediately prior to the conquest.  The following topics  provide  focus for the web site:
  • Conquistadors
    • This section  examines the initial impact of the conquistadors. It focuses on their daily life, indigenous relations, competition and violence and  examines the unique culture that emerged.
  • Mestizo Culture
    • This section  discusses the unique position of mestizos during the Spanish colonial period.  Due to their status between the Spanish and Indian led to their isolation from both groups.  The mestizos faced certain social and economic restrictions because of their racial distinction.  At the same time, many of the mestizos were able to integrate themselves, at least partially, into the privileged Spanish society.  Because of their precarious position, there was no standard level of treatment and acceptance of mestizos during this time period.
  • Social Changes (Women)
    • This section  explores how the role of women in Incan society changed during the Spanish rule.  There were many changes for indigenous women when the Spaniards conquered the Tahuantinsuyu.  This section examines women's changing role in religion, politics, economics, and the family.  Indigenous women were forced to relinquish a great deal of autonomy under Spanish rule, in this site we will attempt to give a picture of what life was like for women before the Spanish came, the transformations that took place, and how this affected indigenous women.
